PONOKA -- The Town of Ponoka is exploring possible speed limit changes for local roads.
According to the municipality, the idea was first tabled at Ponoka's recent Council meeting on October 28, 2025, by Councillor Teri Underhill. At the meeting, Underhill directed administration to examine the possibility of lowering speed limits to 40 km/h along most local roads.
If the plans go ahead, this would affect the majority of local roadways in the community, aside from school and playground zones -- which would remain at their current speed limits. At this time, most of the speed limits for local roads in Ponoka are set at 50 km/h.
At the same meeting on October 28th, Councillor Underhill also tabled a separate motion to direct administration to review 48 Avenue by Ponoka Elementary School for safety and traffic calming measures, in collaboration with school officials.
