PONOKA COUNTY -- One seat will be up for grabs on Ponoka County Council in the upcoming municipal election.

This will be for Division 3, as Tom Kootstra will be hoping to unseat Incumbent Doug Weir, who will be seeking re-election. Speaking to 89.7 The One, Weir talked about why residents should vote for him on October 20th.

"Because I'm committed to being responsive to the concerns of the division, through residents and Ponoka County," said Weir. "I'm diligent, and always seeking to become more knowledgeable, listen, ask questions, and seek understanding."

The Councillor position for Ponoka County's Division 3 will be the only seat to be decided by voters, as four Councillors have already been re-elected via acclamation. Weir says that one of his goals -- if re-elected -- would be to advocate for a diversified economic base.

"That would allow us to keep our taxes low, but also allow us the ability to continue our programs," said Weir. "Our different programs, such as our equipment program, where every year we buy new graders."

Weir cites the new lift on Elkhorn Road as one of Council's recent accomplishments, saying the project was possible because Council and Administration were able to build up their reserves. He notes that the initiative was also completed one year ahead of schedule.
